Ponor on Stara Planina is a natural phenomenon located near the village of Dojkinci, on the northeastern part of the mountain, at an altitude of about 1400 meters. The natural depression is 700 meters long and rich in water sources with temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Numerous springs that emerge from the sandstone become streams that merge and enter the cave, after which this depression got its name. This cave is one of the largest and most impressive in Serbia, with three openings and a length of 164 meters tested so far.<\/p>

Ponor Bay on Stara Planina is often flooded during rains, and snow melts in spring. During that period, a lake is created at the bottom of the bay because the underground channels cannot receive all the water. The lake is usually maintained for up to a month. On the other hand, the sinkhole (a river that plunges into a pit for part of its course) is permanent because four permanent springs flow out in the bay itself. Therefore, when a lake is formed in Ponor Bay, a lake is also included in the sinkhole. This indicates that these two hydrological systems are connected. This means that the main underground flow that feeds the Dojkina spring begins with the Ponor sinkhole, collecting other waters to the spring.<\/p>
