Strict Nature Reserve Arbinje
Strict nature reserves are the jewels of our planet, places where nature reigns undisturbed and where human intervention is minimized. These protected areas preserve the most valuable ecosystems, allowing plants and animals to live in their natural habitats without the influence of the modern world. Legends and stories about these areas are often shrouded in mysticism and awe. It is said that ancient peoples believed such places were home to gods and nature spirits, and they were sanctuaries visited only by the bravest. Today, strict nature reserves represent invaluable oases of biodiversity, offering refuge to rare and endangered animal and plant species, giving us the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of untouched nature.
Introduction to the Paradise Valley of Arbinje
Arbinje on Stara Planina is a true paradise and one of the most beautiful river valleys in Serbia. Located along the upper course of the Dojkinačka River, this place exudes a unique beauty that sets it apart from all other natural locations. The Dojkinačka River originates on the Koprena plateau, and its crystal-clear water and alluvial plain create a stunning landscape.
The Enchanting Ambiance of Stara Planina
When you start from the village of Dojkinci upstream along the Dojkinačka River, you will soon find yourself in dense spruce forests that surround Arbinje. This thick vegetation contributes to the fact that dusk falls here already in the late afternoon. At every step, water flows down the rocks and along the paths, creating the impression that you have stepped into a magical, computer-generated world.
A Haven for Hikers and Adventurers
Arbinje is a true delight for hikers and adventurers. This strict nature reserve is full of endemic species and provides shelter for numerous animals, including the brown bear and the endangered capercaillie. Although plans for the construction of a mini-hydropower plant and deforestation are in place, the nature of this southern slope of Stara Planina remains wild and enchanting.
The Waterfalls of Arbinje
Arbinje is known for its spectacular waterfalls. The most famous among them are the Tupavica Waterfall, Koprenski Waterfall, Piljski Waterfall, Čunguljski Skok, and the Tri Kladenca Waterfall. Each of these waterfalls offers unique beauty and contributes to the natural wealth of this region.
Tupavica Waterfall
Tupavica, also known as Tupavac, is 25 meters high and is located at the entrance to Arbinje, about an hour and a half walk from the village of Dojkinci. It is best visited in spring or summer when it is most impressive, but also in winter when the frozen scene is breathtaking. You can read more about it here.
Koprenski Waterfall
At 103.5 meters high, Koprenski Waterfall is one of the largest in Serbia. It originates at an altitude of 1,820 meters and consists of several cascades. It is more difficult to reach, but it is worth every step. The only waterfall higher than this one on Stara Planina is Kaluđerski Skok, with an impressive height of 232 meters.
Piljski Waterfall
Piljski Waterfall, or Pilj Waterfall, is 64 meters high, consists of two cascades, and is a real challenge for adventurers. It is most easily reached from the village of Topli Do, and its wild beauty leaves visitors breathless.
Čunguljski Skok Waterfall
This 40-meter-high waterfall was discovered only in 1996. It is located near Piljski Waterfall and represents a challenge for hikers. With its beauty, it completes the natural spectacle of this area.
Tri Kladenca Waterfall
Tri Kladenca Waterfall is located at an altitude of 1,645 meters, below the peak of Kopren. Although less known, it offers an impressive sight and further enriches the natural beauty of Arbinje.
Mountain Peaks Around Arbinje
The two most significant mountain peaks in the vicinity of Arbinje are Tri Čuke and Kopren. Both peaks are accessible, but the ascent is made more difficult by dense juniper shrubs.
Tri Čuke
Tri Čuke, 1,937 meters high, is protected as a special nature reserve. The peak looks like three peaks and is located right on the border with Bulgaria. A path leading to it was built in 1948.
Kopren
Kopren is the highest peak of Stara Planina, standing at 1,963 meters. Also protected as a nature reserve, this peak offers beautiful views and represents a challenge for hikers. Below it, the Kopren and Tri Kladenca waterfalls originate.
Threats to Natural Beauty
A mini-hydropower plant is planned to be built on the Dojkinačka River, posing a serious threat to the natural environment of Arbinje. Although the city of Pirot recently removed the locations for hydropower plant construction from the spatial plan, deforestation still threatens this precious reserve.
