Until 1927, the Yerma River Canyon was wholly isolated and impassable until the historic moment when a narrow-gauge railroad was cut through this wild gorge. This crucial event took place to secure access to the coal mine known as "Rakita". During the 1960s, the mine was closed, and in the 1970s, an asphalt road was built, replacing the railroad.
