Crkva Svetih apostola Petra i Pavla
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is located on Stara Planina near the village of Rsovci in the cave of Kalik Hill. This incredible building was built in the 13th century. Although it is located in a cave, that is not what makes this church unique. A fresco of "Bald Jesus" was painted there” known as the Infant Jesus. You read that right, it's a young Jesus without hair.
Archaeological research shows that the fresco was painted in the second half of the 13th century. It is assumed that the fresco was painted by hermits from Sinai who occasionally traveled to Serbia. To make matters even more unusual, "Bald Jesus."” is painted in Buddhist garb, and watch now this, in the eight-pointed star. Amazing.
Opinions are divided as to how this work was created. The most common opinion among fresco painters is that this work was done by a painter influenced by various trends in Christianity. In the fresco, it is visible that in the hands of Jesus, there is not a cross, but only one ima three fingers raised, which is synonymous with baptism. This church is classified as a historical rarity and a cultural asset. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, also known as the Cave Church, measures 7x8m and is located only 10m above the river Visočica. The entire iconostasis is made of wooden beams. What gives this church an additional charm is the beautiful nature in which it is located, which this area has in abundance.
Previously, the road was very inaccessible and it was difficult to reach the church. Recently, the path to the church has been renovated by the World Tourism Agency, so now you can easily to visit this unusual church.
Our warm recommendation is to set aside some time when you stay at Hotel Happy and visit this unique architectural and painting wonder, which is only 50 kilometers from our hotel.
