Zavojsko lake

The year is 1963. Winter is fearlessly ravaging southeastern Serbia. In the night between February 23 and 24, parts of Stara Planina begin to separate. Heavy rainfall causes a natural disaster. A large amount of earth and rocks slide into the river Visočica. A natural dam with a height of 50m is being created! Due to the impossibility of the river flowing, heavy floods threaten to submerge all settlements located downstream. Nis is also at risk! Fortunately, the army reacts quickly, breaking through the natural dam and building an artificial one. A major disaster was averted!

In our nation, there is a saying, "every evil for some good." That is true when it comes to Lake Zavoj. An almost natural disaster of enormous proportions led to the creation of one of the most beautiful artificial lakes in Serbia, which is little known and deserves the epithet of one of the most beautiful lakes in Serbia.

Where is Zavojsko Lake located?

Only 40 km from Dimitrovgrad, in the national park Stara Planina, is Zavojsko lake. Born in a gorge on Stara Planina, with an area of 5.5 square kilometers, every view of this natural phenomenon leaves you breathless. An altitude of 600 meters enhances the overall enjoyment, providing clean air that strengthens the immune system.

How did Zavojsko Lake get its name?

Zavojsko Lake did not get its name from the many bends that give the whole lake a specific and unique look but from the village of Zavoj, which was submerged when this artificial lake was created.
